There's something about a fresh Alcantara or suede steering wheel that just feels right. But there's a problem. Most Alcantara steering wheels don't wear out. They get ruined. That shiny, greasy finish you see on so many performance cars isn't worn material. It's usually years of built-up sweat, skin oils, moisturisers, dirt and grime that have become embedded deep into the fibres. The good news? In most cases, you can bring it back. And the even better news? It's actually one of the most satisfying details you can do.
Contrary to popular belief, Alcantara shouldn't look shiny. A healthy Alcantara or suede surface should have a soft, matte appearance with a visible nap or texture. Over time, oils from your hands contaminate the material, causing the fibres to stick together and flatten down. This creates that horrible glossy appearance that makes an otherwise immaculate interior feel tired and neglected. The sooner you clean it, the easier it is to restore.
