Wheel Protection

Wheel wax

Mint Rims 100ml - Wheel wax

The Auto Finesse® Mint Rims wheel wax protects your wheels with durable synthetic waxes, keeping them in mint condition. Mint Rims is created from a blend of high temperature synthetic waxes, and fast flashing solvent carriers. This blend of ingredients helps to seal your wheels from hot, corrosive brake dust and oxidation, while holding up against the rigors of the road. The durability on average is 2-3 months between applications, even on performance vehicles subject to frequent high-speed braking. Mint Rims wheel wax can be used on any wheel finish, including painted, powder-coated, clear coated, anodised, chromed, and bare polished alloys. Application: We advise applying Mint Rims before a change in weather. This should be before both summer and winter weather changes. Applying Mint Rims wheel wax before these weather changes will make sure that heavy contaminates such as road salt, brake dust and road grime will not adhere to your freshly cleaned wheels. Freshly refurbished wheels should not be over looked, either. When your wheels come back from paint, powder coating or polishing is the perfect time to lay down a layer of Mint Rims wheel sealant. A top tip is; whilst the wheels are off the car make sure to wax tighter areas such as behind spokes. This will help preserve your wheels and make sure you they always look factory fresh. Once applied, the need for dedicated wheel cleaners is greatly reduced, and a pH neutral car shampoo is all that is required to bring back a sparkling fresh finish.40

Start by cleaning the wheels with a strong dedicated wheel cleaner, like Auto Finesse Imperial, making sure to remove all traces of brake dust from the wheel surface. If heavy tar or brake dust deposits persist after cleaning, use dedicated tar and iron fallout remover products like Auto Finesse ObliTARate and Iron Out to get the wheels as clean as possible. At this point you can dry your wheels with a Microfiber Drying Towel. Mint Rims is a very forgiving product when it comes to surface preparation, but at this stage you can also clay and polish your wheels for the best results before sealing. Mint Rims is compatible with Mercury metal polish for bare alloy wheels, and any of our signature Pre-Wax Cleansers for clear and powdercoated finishes. These additional preparation steps will help to significantly increase gloss, remove unsightly scratches, and increase bonding. Once the finish has been prepped to your satisfaction, you can now use a round Foam Applicator, or Waxmate to apply Mint Rims. A little bit goes a long way, so try to apply the product in a thin, even coat. As soon as you have applied the first coat to the entire wheel surface, you can immediately remove the residue with a short-pile Microfiber Towel. Additional coats can be layered immediately, or after you have completed the other wheels. No curing time is necessary. For maximum durability and gloss, we recommend applying 2-3 coats, though one coat will still provide your wheels with decent protection.

For regular maintenance of your protected wheels, a pH-neutral shampoo like Auto Finesse Lather should be all that is necessary. However, if heavier cleaning is needed, Citrus Power will give you the extra grime-removing power you need without degrading the finish. Avoid using strong wheel cleaners, as these will negatively affect the durability of Mint Rims.

Can this be used on matte/satin wheel finishes?

Yes, Mint Rims is safe to use on matte and satin wheel finishes.

What’s the difference between a wax and a ceramic coating?

The main difference comes in the way these protection layers bond to surfaces. A wax (like those in our Signature Wax Collection, along with Radiance Carnauba Creme and Mint Rims Wheel Wax), will physically hold on to the top layer, creating a strong bond and leaving a layer of wax protection that’s separate to the paintwork. Waxes can be durable from a few months, right up to 8-months or so, depending to the content of hard wax and other ingredients in the blend. A ceramic coating however, will chemically bond to the surface, essentially becoming an integral part of the top layer, and this is the reason why coatings tend to have more durability – because these molecular bonds are more resilient to chemicals and abrasion, making them more difficult to remove. The Si02-based coating in our Paintwork Protection Kit for example has a durability of up to 12-months for exactly this reason. It’s also explains why a ceramic coating cannot be applied over the top of a wax layer, because the wax will block the chemical bonding process, but a wax can be applied over a (fully cured) ceramic coating, because it will happily bond to almost any surface. Both types of protection layer are impermeable to moisture, make your paintwork appear deeper and shiner, and ensure that the vehicle is easier to clean the next time around – simply because the grime won’t stick. When it comes to choosing between the two, Waxes tend to be slightly easier to apply, and ceramic coatings tend to offer more hardy protection for daily drivers, but the truth is that, for the most part, it’s all down to personal preference… especially when it comes to looks. Ceramic coatings are man-made and engineered to be perfectly clear, allowing light to pass through and back to the eye completely uniformly. Hard waxes have a certain amount of natural impurities that bend and soften the light as it comes back to your eye – this is what gives them their trademark warm glow.
