Why Prep Matters Before Protection
We've all seen it. A freshly washed car, straight out of the bucket wash, immediately getting a coat of wax or sealant thrown on top. The problem? Protection is only ever as good as the surface underneath it. Think of applying wax, sealant or a ceramic coating like painting a wall at home. You wouldn't paint over dirt, dust and loose debris and expect a perfect finish. Your car is no different.
Even after washing, your paintwork will still be holding onto bonded contamination such as:
- Iron fallout from brakes and industrial pollution.
- Tar spots from the road surface.
- Tree sap and environmental fallout.
- Embedded grime that regular washing simply can't remove.
Applying protection over these contaminants prevents it from bonding properly to the surface. The result? Reduced durability, compromised gloss and a finish that never feels truly smooth.
1. Decontaminate - Use an iron fallout remover and tar remover to safely dissolve stubborn contamination that washing leaves behind.
2. Clay The Paintwork - A clay bar removes the remaining bonded contamination, leaving the paintwork perfectly smooth and ready for protection.
3. Refine The Finish (Optional) - Machine polishing or using a cleaner polish will remove light defects, maximise gloss and create the ideal surface for your chosen protection.
4. Panel Wipe Before applying ceramic coatings or sealants, use a panel wipe to remove any polishing oils and ensure maximum bonding.
Take the time to prepare your paintwork properly and you'll be rewarded with:
