The Complete Car Care Routine
A good car care routine isn't about using as many products as possible. It's about using the right products, in the right order, for the right reason.
Get the process right and looking after your car becomes considerably easier.
Heavy dirt is removed before you touch the paint. Contamination is dealt with safely. Clean surfaces are protected. And regular maintenance prevents every wash from turning into a full day's detailing.
Whether you're giving your daily driver its weekly wash or bringing a car back after a weekend of hard driving, the fundamentals remain the same.
Here's the complete car care routine, from the first rinse to the final finish.
The Correct Order for Detailing a Car
Before getting into each stage, it helps to understand the overall process.
For a thorough exterior detail, we'd generally work in this order:
- Wheels and tyres
- Pre-wash
- Snow foam
- Pressure rinse
- Contact wash
- Final rinse
- Chemical decontamination
- Clay decontamination, if required
- Drying
- Paint correction, if required
- Paint preparation
- Paint protection
- Glass
- Tyres and exterior trim
- Final inspection
That doesn't mean you need to complete all 15 stages every time you clean your car.
Far from it.
For a normal maintenance wash, you may only need the first six stages followed by drying and any necessary protection top-up.
Decontamination, polishing and major protection stages are performed when the vehicle actually needs them.
Knowing what not to do is just as important as knowing what to do.
Step 1: Start With The Wheels And Tyres
We generally recommend tackling the wheels before washing the bodywork.
Why?
Because they're filthy.
Brake dust, road grime, tar and iron contamination accumulate around the wheels, tyres and arches. Cleaning them can involve plenty of rinsing and agitation, so there's little sense in doing this after you've already cleaned the surrounding paintwork.
Make sure the wheels are cool before you start.
Apply a suitable wheel cleaner and allow it to work for the recommended amount of time.
Use dedicated wheel brushes to clean the faces, spokes, barrels and tighter areas around wheel nuts and brake components.
For heavily contaminated wheels, an iron fallout remover can help dissolve embedded ferrous particles caused primarily by brake dust.
Then thoroughly rinse.
Don't Forget The Tyres
Tyres also accumulate old dressings, road grime and dirt.
Cleaning the tyre wall before applying fresh dressing gives you a far cleaner, more consistent finish.
Agitate using a suitable tyre brush until the surface is clean, then rinse thoroughly. Never apply fresh tyre dressing over layers of old product and dirt if you can avoid it.
Preparation matters here just as much as it does with paintwork.


Step 2: Pre-Wash The Vehicle
Once the wheels are finished, move onto the bodywork.
But don't reach for your wash mitt yet.
One of the fundamental principles of safe car washing is to remove as much dirt as possible before making physical contact with the paintwork.
Road grime contains fine abrasive particles.
If those particles remain on the surface when you start washing, there's a greater chance of dragging them across the clear coat and introducing swirl marks and fine scratches.
A dedicated pre-wash cleaner helps break down traffic film and heavier contamination.
Pay particular attention to the dirtiest areas of the vehicle:
Lower doors.
Sills.
Bumpers.
Wheel arches.
Behind the wheels.
The rear of the vehicle.
Allow the cleaner sufficient dwell time to work, but never let it dry onto the surface.


Step 3: Apply Snow Foam
Snow foam provides another opportunity to remove contamination before the contact wash.
Apply an even layer across the vehicle and allow it to dwell.
The objective isn't simply to cover the car in the thickest foam physically possible. Foam needs to clean.
As it works, it helps soften and lift contamination from the surface so it can be rinsed away.
This is particularly useful on vehicles carrying heavier road grime, winter dirt or contamination from long-distance driving.
Once the foam has been given time to work, thoroughly pressure rinse the car.
Work methodically and make sure you flush contamination from panel gaps, lower sections and other areas where grime collects.
At this point the vehicle should already look considerably cleaner.
Now we're ready to touch it.


Step 4: The Contact Wash
The contact wash removes the remaining dirt that couldn't be safely removed during the pre-wash stages.
Use a dedicated automotive shampoo and a clean wash mitt.
Start at the top of the vehicle and work downwards.
The roof, glass and upper sections of the doors are typically cleaner than the bumpers, sills and lower panels, so there's little sense in starting with the dirtiest section and carrying that contamination upwards.
Work methodically around the car.
Frequently rinse your wash mitt to release the dirt it has collected.
And avoid aggressively scrubbing stubborn marks.
If contamination isn't releasing with normal washing, there's probably a better way of removing it. We'll come to that shortly.
Step 5: Rinse Thoroughly
Once every panel has been washed, thoroughly rinse away the shampoo.
Don't rush this stage.
Pay attention to areas where product and water can become trapped:
Door mirrors.
Grilles.
Badges.
Window seals.
Door shuts.
Panel gaps.
Spoilers.
Fuel filler areas.
These places have an annoying habit of holding onto soapy water and releasing it approximately four seconds after you've finished drying the car.
A thorough rinse reduces the problem.


Step 6: Assess The Paint
For a normal maintenance wash, you may be able to move straight to drying.
But if you're carrying out a deeper detail, now is a good time to assess the condition of the paintwork.
Does it feel rough?
Can you see small tar spots?
Is there embedded iron contamination?
Are there water spots that normal washing hasn't removed?
If so, the vehicle may need decontamination.
This is where a proper car care routine starts becoming different from simply washing a car.
Step 7: Chemical Decontamination
Where possible, remove contamination chemically before using an abrasive process. Different contaminants require different solutions.
Iron Contamination
Tiny ferrous particles can become embedded in paintwork and wheels. These can originate from brake dust, railways and general environmental contamination. An iron fallout remover chemically reacts with these particles and helps dissolve them so they can be safely rinsed away.
Tar
Small black tar spots commonly build up behind the wheels and along the lower sections of the vehicle. A dedicated tar remover softens these deposits, allowing them to be removed without aggressively picking or scrubbing at the paint.
Water Spots
Mineral deposits can remain after water evaporates on the surface. Depending on their severity, these may require a dedicated water spot removal process. The important principle is always the same: Identify the contamination first, then choose the appropriate solution. Don't simply attack everything with the strongest chemical in the cupboard.
Step 8: Clay The Paint — But Only If It Needs It
After chemical decontamination, some bonded contamination may remain.
This is where detailing clay can be useful.
Clay physically removes contamination protruding from the surface of the paint.
Use plenty of suitable lubricant and work gently over small sections.
You'll often feel the surface becoming smoother as the contamination is removed.
But clay isn't a mandatory part of every car wash.
Because it's a physical decontamination process, it can introduce light marring, particularly on softer paint.
If the paint feels smooth and there's no bonded contamination left to remove, don't clay it simply because a detailing checklist told you to.
Every detailing process should have a purpose.
Step 9: Dry The Vehicle
Once the cleaning and any necessary decontamination stages are complete, dry the vehicle thoroughly.
Use a clean, high-quality microfibre drying towel.
Modern drying towels are designed to absorb large quantities of water without needing aggressive pressure.
Work methodically around the vehicle.
A suitable drying aid can provide extra lubrication while helping enhance gloss and protection.
If you're preparing the car for machine polishing or certain longer-term protection products, however, you'll generally want the paint clean and free from unnecessary residues.
The next stage dictates how you finish the previous one.


Step 10: Inspect The Paintwork
With the car completely clean and dry, you can properly assess the paint.
Good lighting is essential.
Look for:
- Swirl marks
- Fine scratches
- Oxidation
- Water spot etching
- Holograms
- Previous polishing defects
- Deeper isolated scratches Then decide what actually needs correcting.
Not every car requires machine polishing.
And not every scratch should be removed.
Polishing works by removing a microscopic amount of material from the surface to reduce the visual impact of defects.
Automotive clear coat is finite.
The objective should therefore be to achieve the finish you want while removing as little material as reasonably possible.
Step 11: Machine Polish If Required
Paint correction can range from a light single-stage enhancement to a multi-stage correction process.
The correct approach depends on the condition and hardness of the paint.
A lighter polish and pad combination may be enough to remove minor swirl marks and significantly improve gloss.
More heavily damaged paint may require a cutting stage followed by refinement.
Always begin with the least aggressive combination likely to achieve the desired result.
Perform a test section.
Assess it.
Then adjust if necessary.
Machine polishing isn't about attacking the entire car with the most aggressive compound you own. It's controlled defect removal. Sometimes improving a defect is a better decision than completely removing it.

Step 12: Prepare The Paint For Protection
If you've polished the vehicle and are preparing to apply protection, make sure the surface is suitable for the product you've chosen.
Polishing oils and residues can interfere with the bonding of some sealants and ceramic coatings.
A dedicated panel preparation product can remove these residues and leave the surface ready for protection.
This stage becomes particularly important when applying longer-term ceramic protection.
Preparation is everything.
You can have the best protective product in the world, but applying it over poorly prepared paintwork will compromise the result.
Step 13: Protect The Paint
Now you've done all the work getting the paint clean, smooth and glossy, it makes sense to protect it. There are several approaches.
Wax
A quality car wax offers excellent gloss, water behaviour and protection. It's ideal for enthusiasts who enjoy maintaining their cars regularly and appreciate the finish a traditional wax can create.
Paint Sealant
Synthetic paint sealants provide an easy-to-use protective layer with strong durability and straightforward maintenance.
They're particularly useful for everyday vehicles.
Spray And Rinse Protection
Modern spray-on and rinse-applied products make adding protection incredibly quick.
These can be excellent for maintenance washes, topping up existing protection or giving an unprotected vehicle an easy protective layer.
Ceramic Coating
Ceramic coatings offer a more durable approach for vehicles where longer-term protection is desirable.
The preparation and application process is more involved, but a properly applied and maintained ceramic coating can make subsequent cleaning considerably easier.
Which is best?
The one that suits how you actually use and maintain your car.
There's little point choosing a protection system purely because it offers the longest theoretical durability if it doesn't suit the way you look after the vehicle.
Step 14: Clean And Protect The Glass
Clean glass makes an enormous difference to the finished vehicle.
Use a dedicated automotive glass cleaner to remove fingerprints, road film and residue.
Pay particular attention to the inside of the windscreen, where contamination can build gradually without being immediately obvious.
For exterior glass, dedicated protection can improve water repellency and make the surface easier to maintain.
As always, apply products according to their intended use and make sure everything is fully buffed and streak-free. Visibility comes before detailing points.
Step 15: Finish The Tyres And Exterior Trim
Once the major cleaning and protection stages are complete, finish the details.
Apply a suitable tyre dressing to clean, dry tyre walls.
The objective doesn't have to be an excessively glossy finish.
A clean satin or factory-style appearance often complements a properly detailed vehicle far better.
Inspect exterior plastics and rubber trim too.
These areas are constantly exposed to UV, weather, cleaning chemicals and road contamination.
Suitable dressings and protection can help preserve their appearance and prevent them looking tired against freshly detailed paintwork.
The Interior Car Care Routine
While the exterior tends to get most of the attention, the same philosophy applies inside the car.
Start by removing loose items and rubbish.
Vacuum the seats, carpets and difficult-to-reach areas. Clean interior plastics and surfaces.
Deal with fabric or leather where necessary.
Clean high-contact areas such as the steering wheel, gear selector and door handles.
Finish with the interior glass. The objective shouldn't be to cover every surface in dressing.
Modern interiors generally look their best when they're simply clean and returned to their original appearance.
Clean leather shouldn't necessarily be shiny.
Clean Alcantara shouldn't feel greasy.
And your dashboard shouldn't look like it's been dipped in cooking oil. Natural wins.

How Often Should You Detail Your Car?
There isn't a universal detailing schedule.
How often your vehicle needs attention depends entirely on how it's used.
A daily driver covering hundreds of miles a week through winter will require more maintenance than a garage-kept weekend car. As a general approach, think about your routine in three levels.
Regular Maintenance Wash
As often as the vehicle needs it.
Wheels.
Pre-wash.
Snow foam where necessary.
Contact wash.
Rinse.
Dry.
Maintain protection.
That's your normal routine.
Periodic Deep Clean
Every few months or whenever condition dictates. More thorough wheel cleaning.
Chemical decontamination. Interior deep cleaning.
Glass.
Trim.
Inspection of existing protection.
Major Detail
When the vehicle actually requires it.
Full decontamination.
Paint correction.
Deep cleaning.
Fresh long-term protection.
The important part isn't following a calendar religiously.
It's learning to assess the vehicle.

A Better Car Care Routine Is Usually A Simpler One
It's easy to make detailing unnecessarily complicated.
There will always be another product, another process and another technique you could add.
But a good routine comes back to a few fundamentals.
Remove heavy contamination before touching the paint.
Use the right cleaner for the job. Avoid unnecessary abrasion. Polish only when correction is required.
Protect the finish you've created.
Maintain it regularly.
And adapt the process to the condition of the vehicle rather than blindly following a checklist.
